Day Six Painting: Still Life of Fish and Cat by Clara Peeters

You knew I'd figure out a way to get a cat in here somehow, right? Well, here it is, a cat in the throes of temptation.

The cat in the painting looks sneaky and I'm sure he or she is playing the waiting game. As soon as the artist steps away for just a moment...

Because I am obsessed with cats, I took some pictures of cats in paintings when we were at the Rijkmuseum in Amsterdam a couple years ago. Here they are:

Day Four Paintings: Imatra in Wintertime by Akseli Gallen-Kallela

Spring has just begun, sort of, here in St. Louis and I don't especially want to be reminded of winter, but I found this painting, Imatra in Wintertime, by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, stunning in its cold beauty.

The painting depicts the Imatra Rapids in Finland, and while it's easy enough to see that, there seems to be a second theatrical layer to the painting, filled with movement, like a choreographed dance. I love the idea that nature can organize into something with rhythm and pattern. I guess art can make that happen more often than happenstance.

Beautiful or not, I'm ready for spring!
