Spring has just begun, sort of, here in St. Louis and I don't especially want to be reminded of winter, but I found this painting, Imatra in Wintertime, by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, stunning in its cold beauty.
The painting depicts the Imatra Rapids in Finland, and while it's easy enough to see that, there seems to be a second theatrical layer to the painting, filled with movement, like a choreographed dance. I love the idea that nature can organize into something with rhythm and pattern. I guess art can make that happen more often than happenstance.
Beautiful or not, I'm ready for spring!
