Next Household Challenge: Cleaning the Laundry Room

Our laundry room is a mess. It's a large room we added to the basement shortly after we moved in and we've never finished the inside. What we have done is take all kinds of things into the room that are vaguely related to things already and leave them there to rot.

When I say "our" laundry room, I mean MY laundry room. Eric sometimes has clothes in the laundry room, and he is the primary user of the toilet down there, but otherwise, it's mine. Which is why I said "No way!" when Eric suggested I get rid of my sewing machine. You can't see the sewing machine in the pictures below because it's kind of buried under toilet paper packages, but it's there. And I'm sure I'll use it once I find it again.

If I don't use it over the next few years, then I'll get rid of it.

Maybe. I mean, my mom has had her sewing machine her entire adult life and I don't think she's used it since I was in college. It's okay.

I've decluttered the laundry room twice in recent weeks. I went through several shelves of blankets, bedding, rags and table clothes, and I got rid of several garbage full of stuff, but that barely made a dent. Eric and I went through some cabinets we hung down there and got rid of a bunch of old fish tank stuff we weren't using anymore. Nice, but not nice enough.

It's kind of crazy how much stuff is still down there. So I'm going to spend this week cleaning, decluttering and organizing. Hopefully at the end of the week I'll have a more usable space. And maybe Eric will be inspired and feel like hanging some drywall.

Okay, no one ever feels like hanging drywall. It's just a necessary evil if you want walls.

So here are some before pictures of the laundry room.

I've already decluttered the shelves on the right side. Also, I appear to be stockpiling toilet paper. And those balls on the dryer are felted wool dryer balls. Google them; they're awesome.

I know what you're thinking and the answer is NO, you cannot have that horse head latch-hook rug! It came with the house and it's staying with the house.

But there are probably a lot of other things you could have. I'll let you know in a few days, after I declutter.
